Pet Stains on Your Carpet? Here's Exactly What to Do

Whether it's a new puppy learning the ropes or an older pet having an unexpected accident, pet stains are something almost every pet owner deals with at some point.

The key is acting quickly. The sooner you treat the area, the better chance you have of preventing permanent staining and lingering odours.

Step 1: Blot the Area Immediately

The first instinct is usually to scrub—but resist the urge.

Instead, use a clean white towel or paper towel to gently blot the area. Continue blotting until you've absorbed as much liquid as possible. Scrubbing can force the stain deeper into the carpet fibres and make it much harder to remove.

Step 2: Rinse with Cool Water

Once you've removed as much moisture as possible, lightly rinse the area with cool water and continue blotting.

Avoid using hot water, as heat can cause proteins in pet accidents to bond to carpet fibres, making stains more difficult to remove.

Less water is better than too much. Oversaturating the carpet can allow moisture to reach the underlay, where odours can linger.

Step 3: Use the Right Cleaner

If you have an enzyme-based pet stain remover, now is the time to use it. These products are designed to break down the organic material that causes both stains and smells.

Be cautious with household cleaners. Bleach, ammonia, and heavily fragranced products can damage your carpet and sometimes make the problem worse. In fact, ammonia smells similar to urine for pets, which may encourage them to return to the same spot.

Step 4: Book a Professional Deep Clean

Even if the stain looks like it's gone, urine and other pet accidents can soak deep into the carpet fibres and underlay. That's often where lingering odours come from—and why they seem to come back days or even weeks later.

At Peak Steam, we use high-temperature steam cleaning and pet-safe cleaning solutions to remove the source of the odour, not just mask it. Our deep cleaning process helps lift stubborn stains, eliminate trapped bacteria, and leave your carpets fresh, clean, and safe for your whole family.

The sooner you have a pet accident professionally treated, the better the chances of preventing permanent staining and long-term odours. If your furry friend has had an accident, book your Peak Steam appointment and let us take care of the rest.
